Development of compact electro-mechanical actuators
Feasibility cum RFI response for DRDO’s TDF projects
Â
Precision robotics applications like exoskeletons, humanoids, and quadrupeds require compact actuators, which are typically imported as integrated systems or components. Customized solutions for specific applications are not available. To address this, the project aims to develop these actuators indigenously with Indian industry partners. Key components such as frameless motors, strain wave gear assemblies, encoders, torque sensors, and electronic controllers are mostly imported. Current practices involve assembling and testing these imported components. With the increasing demand for advanced robots and exoskeletons, developing these technologies locally will involve collaboration among specialized industries, led by a lead partner.

Testing and Certification Requirements
The testing and certification for the development of compact electro-mechanical actuators in the Indian context will include performance testing for torque, speed, and power, as well as durability, thermal, and environmental tests. Compliance with relevant standards for safety, reliability, and efficiency is required.
Certification is required from NABL, DGQA and BIS.
