The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), through its Technology Development Fund (TDF) program, has initiated the “Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) System” project. The project invites detailed proposals from Indian industries, including large enterprises, MSMEs, and startups as consortium partners.
About the Project
The project aims to develop a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system to ensure the structural integrity of vehicle components, particularly for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This system will monitor static strength, durability, and damage tolerance throughout usage, allowing for “Maintenance-on-Demand” by using built-in sensors and SHM algorithms to assess overall health. This innovation creates a “nervous system” for aircraft structures, enhancing real-time failure detection and environmental monitoring.
The SHM project intends to create a robust sensor network utilizing Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors, enabling rapid load estimation and damage measurement.
Key features of the project include:
A.) MIL-Grade Specifications: The FBG sensors will be designed with MIL specifications, ensuring high reliability and durability in demanding environments.
B.) Ruggedized Fiber Optic Components: The system will include ruggedized fiber optic termini and connectors.
C.) Airworthy FBG Interrogator Development: The project includes the development of an airworthy FBG interrogator, facilitating effective data collection and analysis from the sensors.
D.) Comprehensive System Integration: The proposed system will integrate FBG sensors, cable assemblies, connectors, and interrogators, specifically tailored for future UAV applications.
Why Should Indian Industries Participate?
This project offers an exciting opportunity to be part of state-of-the-art SHM technology that ensures the structural integrity of UAV components. Industries that participate will be pioneers in developing innovative solutions for real-time health monitoring, paving the way for “Maintenance-on-Demand” capabilities, which are critical for future defense operations.
