IndiGo Picks Stake in Air Taxi Startup Sarla Aviation

IndiGo has acquired a minor equity stake in Sarla Aviation, marking its entry into the emerging air taxi (eVTOL) segment in India.

The investment, made through IndiGo’s venture arm, is valued at around ₹10 crore and supports Sarla Aviation’s efforts to develop electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft—designed for short-distance urban and intercity travel.

Sarla Aviation is currently building its “Shunya” air taxi platform, aimed at enabling efficient transport solutions such as airport transfers, urban mobility, and regional connectivity. These aircraft are expected to operate without traditional runways and at lower costs than helicopters.

This move comes after IndiGo’s earlier non-binding partnership with Archer Aviation did not materialize due to timeline challenges, prompting the airline to back a domestic startup instead.

The collaboration combines Sarla Aviation’s technology development with IndiGo’s operational scale and aviation expertise, signaling a long-term bet on next-generation urban air mobility in India.

Overall, the investment reflects IndiGo’s strategy to diversify beyond conventional aviation and participate in the future of electric, on-demand air transport solutions.
