Development of Wire Arc Manufacturing Technology for the Repair and Refurbishment of Naval Propeller

Feasibility cum RFI response for DRDO’s TDF projects

Naval propellers are vital components of marine vessels, constantly exposed to harsh operational conditions such as saltwater, high pressures, and constant mechanical stress. Over time, this exposure leads to wear, erosion, and eventual damage, which affects the efficiency and performance of the vessel. Traditional repair methods often involve significant downtime, high repair costs, and the need for specialized infrastructure.

Wire Arc Manufacturing (WAM), a cutting-edge additive manufacturing technique, presents an innovative solution for repairing and refurbishing damaged propellers. WAM restores the structural and operational integrity of the propellers while minimizing lead time and reducing repair costs, enhancing overall operational efficiency.

Functional and Operational Requirements

The development of WAM technology for naval propeller repair aligns with the objectives of operational readiness and cost optimization. Additionally, the technology has the potential for adaptation in other industrial applications, fostering innovation in India’s manufacturing ecosystem.

The new tool should address the following:

A.) A fully functional WAM technology for precision repair and refurbishment of naval propellers.

B.) Significant cost and time savings compared to traditional repair or replacement methods.

C.) Prolonged service life and enhanced performance of repaired propellers.

Testing and Certification Requirements

The development of Wire Arc Manufacturing (WAM) technology for naval propeller repair must undergo performance, material integrity, and durability testing. It should meet standards for structural strength, corrosion resistance, and operational reliability under marine conditions.

Certification is required from DNQA, NDD, and IHQ.
