Uganda Launches Largest Schools eCooking Transition Pilot in Sub-Saharan Africa

Uganda is taking a bold step towards a cleaner, modern, and more sustainable future in education. The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), has launched the largest schools eCooking transition pilot in sub-Saharan Africa to date.

The programme aims to transition 143 pre-selected schools to eCooking, providing them with the necessary electric upgrades and appliances to modernize school kitchens, improve efficiency, and reduce reliance on traditional biomass cooking methods.

About the Schools

The schools selected for this pilot represent a diverse mix of primary and secondary institutions, including public, private, and government-aided schools. These institutions serve populations ranging from a few hundred to several thousand pupils, highlighting the wide-scale impact and importance of this initiative.

  • Efficiency – Saves time and energy in meal preparation for large student populations.

  • Sustainability – Reduces deforestation and supports Uganda’s clean energy transition.

  • Education & Equity – Creates healthier school environments and helps redirect school resources toward learning outcomes.
