Green Cooking Programme in India
The Green Cooking Programme, initiated by GIZ India, aims to accelerate the transition towards clean and sustainable cooking solutions across the country. Four partner states—Odisha, Goa, Assam, and West Bengal—have been identified to pilot and scale interventions. The project is being implemented by Finovista and EKI Energy Services Limited (EKISL) over a period of two years, to be completed by December 2026. The initiative responds to the pressing challenges of traditional cooking practices that continue to dominate in many regions, leading to serious health risks from indoor air pollution, disproportionately affecting women and children, while also contributing to deforestation and carbon emissions. By promoting solar cooking, biogas, e-cooking, and other alternative fuel solutions, the programme envisions a large-scale transition towards modern, efficient, and sustainable cooking practices.
Enabling Environment for Green Cooking
India’s energy sector is undergoing a major transformation, creating a favourable environment for such a shift. Most parts of the country, including rural areas, now have 20 to 24 hours of reliable electricity supply, while the penetration of solar energy continues to expand. This dependable access enables cost-effective electric cooking even in traditionally power-deficient zones. Against this backdrop, GIZ, together with its partners Finovista and EKISL, is providing technical assistance to the states by leveraging Finovista’s expertise in clean cooking programme management and EKISL’s experience in developing carbon market strategies.
Programme Structure
Assess demand (domestic, institutional, commercial), check grid suitability for e-Cooking, evaluate solar/biogas, analyse fuel-use patterns, and engage stakeholders.
Hold consultations, design financial strategies (CSR, carbon finance), segment technologies, and prepare rollout guidelines.
State program launches, awareness campaigns, pilot demonstrations, training, and capacity building. Create monitoring and evaluation systems.
