Development for indigenous thrusters for yard craft
Feasibility cum RFI response for DRDO’s TDF projects
The development of an indigenous thruster for retrofitting aboard naval platform yard crafts aims to enhance the performance and operational capabilities of these platforms.
Currently, most thrusters used in naval applications are imported, and this project seeks to create a locally developed thruster that meets the specific needs of Indian naval platforms. The objective is to design and manufacture a thruster system that ensures efficiency, durability, and reliability while reducing dependence on foreign technology.
This development will contribute to strengthening India’s naval capabilities, improve cost-effectiveness, and support the country’s growing defense self-reliance initiatives.
Functional and Operational Requirements
The newly developed thrusters should adhere to the following specifications:
A.) Full Displacement: 325 Tonnes
B.) Draught: Not more than 3 meters
C.) Speed: 12 to 15 knots at 8570 power
D.) Static Bollard Pull: 25 Tonnes at 85% of power
E.) Type: Z drive unit
F.) Rating: 600 kW
G.) Input Shaft Speed: 1050 RPM
H.) Reduction Ratio: 3.846:1 or similar
I.) Duty Cycle: 100% of operating hours at rated
J.) Steering: 360 degrees
K.) CTC Length: 2350 mm
L.) Mounting: Well mounted
Testing and Certification Requirements
The testing and certification for the development of indigenous thrusters for yard crafts will include performance testing for bollard pull, efficiency, and durability. It will also require compliance with naval standards for safety and reliability.
Certification is required from NDD, and DNQA.
