Development of Terminally Guided Sub-Munition(TGSM) Warhead

Objective
To design and develop an indigenous Terminally Guided Sub-Munition (TGSM) warhead system of rockets capable of engaging moving or high-value targets with high precision during the terminal phase of flight, thereby enhancing lethality, accuracy, and operational flexibility of rocket systems.

Background
Conventional munitions face limitations in striking mobile or fortified targets with precision, especially in dynamic combat scenarios. TGSMs are advanced smart warheads equipped with terminal seekers and control surfaces of rockets that actively home in on designated targets. Globally, these systems are transforming battlefield strike capabilities. Developing TGSM technology is vital for India’s precision-strike and force-multiplier capabilities.

Problem Statement
There is currently no indigenous TGSM warhead solution integrated with terminal homing seekers and control systems of rockets. Imported options are costly, come with export restrictions, and lack customization. A domestic TGSM system will bridge this capability gap and offer high-precision engagement for rocket systems.

Proposed Solution
a. Seeker Integration: Incorporate imaging infrared (IIR), millimetre wave (MMW), or laser-based terminal seekers for target identification and tracking.
b. Guidance and Control: Design miniature control surfaces and actuators for mid-course corrections and terminal guidance.
c. Platform Compatibility: Ensure integration with rocket delivery systems.

Expected Outcome
a. Development of a high-precision TGSM for rockets capable of terminal engagement of moving or concealed targets.
b. Enhanced strike effectiveness with minimal collateral damage.
c. Strategic capability enhancement for rocket systems.

Key Deliverable
a. Functional TGSM warhead prototypes with integrated seekers and guidance mechanisms.
b. Test reports validating accuracy, seeker performance, and lethality.
c. Interface and deployment documentation for integration with delivery systems.
d. Safety and storage compliance certifications.

Strategic Relevance
The TGSM warhead project will greatly enhance the Indian Armed Forces’ capability for surgical strikes and dynamic target engagement. It aligns with self-reliance goals under “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and reduces dependence on foreign precision-guided munition technologies.

Future Expectation
Future versions may include AI-based target recognition, high manouvrability and accuracy.
