Feasibility cum RFI response for DRDO’s TDF projects

Battery operated towing Taxi bots for aircraft movement

Project Description

Aircraft ground movements have traditionally relied on onboard engines or conventional towing vehicles, both of which are fuel-intensive and contribute to significant wear and tear on aircraft. These methods also lead to high carbon emissions, negatively impacting environmental sustainability.

Battery-operated taxi bots offer an innovative and eco-friendly solution by providing autonomous, electric-powered towing capabilities. These taxi bots reduce the dependence on jet fuel for ground operations, helping lower fuel consumption and emissions.

Additionally, their electric power reduces the overall environmental impact, while enhancing operational efficiency, reducing wear on aircraft, and contributing to a more sustainable aviation industry.

Functional and Operational Requirements

The proposed Battery-Operated Taxi Bots will be used for towing aircraft from a standing start to the holding point before take-off and from the holding point to the parking bay after landing. This technology will enable push off taxiing, leading to several benefits, while at the same time also addressing the following:

  • Deployment of battery-operated towing taxi bots capable of handling diverse aircraft types.
  • Reduction in fuel consumption and operational costs associated with aircraft ground movements.
  • Significant decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Testing and Certification Requirements

The battery-operated towing taxi bots for aircraft movement must undergo performance, safety, and environmental testing (temperature, humidity, load capacity). It should meet standards for electric power systems, electromagnetic compatibility, and operational reliability.

Certification is required from DGCA, DGQA, NABL and BIS.
